Living Costs

Knowing the average living cost is an important step when preparing to study in Australia.Australia is a friendly and affordable country which enjoys one of the highest standards of living in the world.

As a general guide, the average international student in Australia spends about AUD$1,652.5 per month (approximately AUD$390 per week) on accommodation, food, clothing, entertainment, transport, international and domestic travel, telephone, and incidental costs. The Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) advises that a single international student requires approximately AU$19,830 per year for living costs.

If any student intends to bring his/her family, they should also account for their living expenses. The Department of Immigration and Border Protection recommends that the budget for living costs according to the following annual rates:

  • Student – AU$19830
  • Students partner – AU$6,940
  • First child – AU$2,970
  • Every other child – AU$2,790
